Overview Ziegler Rugs

Ziegler Rugs - From Persian patterns to modern style

For almost 150 years, Ziegler rugs have inspired culture enthusiasts around the world. The colors and patterns of Ziegler rugs vary and are extremely creative, yet the classic Ziegler Farahan is the most popular to most sought after Ziegler rug. Other well-known representatives are the Ziegler Chobi, the Ziegler Bakhtiari, the Ziegler Shaal and the Ziegler Abrash. All of them differ essentially in style.

The history of Ziegler rugs

Ziegler rugs owe their name to the Swiss businessman Philipp Ziegler, who at the end of the 19th century was the first European to establish a rug weaving factory in the former Persia. There he had modern rugs made that were deliberately adapted to European tastes without abandoning Persian patterns and traditions. With success: Ziegler rugs made of wool soon became an international hallmark of quality. Today, however, Ziegler rugs are no longer knotted by the original manufacturer, but the reputation and enthusiasm for the ornamental and modern rugs has remained. With the beautiful color combination of beige as the base color and a secondary color such as red, blue or green, a hand-knotted Ziegler rug beautifies any living room and blends beautifully with the furniture of its surroundings.

Design and colors of the Ziegler rug

Classic Ziegler rugs are decorated with large floral illustrations and usually do not have a real ornament, but a center point from which the pattern runs. Beige is used as the base color and in the border or centerpiece usually red, blue and more rarely brown or even green. The colors are much more restrained than in classic Persian rugs and thus blend in with their surroundings more easily than a lush Oriental rug.

Modern Ziegler rugs

Recently, the trend is towards creative and new design Ziegler rugs, which have an original Persian model, but completely reinterpreted. The Ziegler Bakhtiar is a good example of how an ancient pattern is knotted in a new and modern way as a Ziegler. In this process, the traditional field or garden pattern is reduced to its essential components, creating a completely new rug. All that remains of the old original Bakhtiar rug are the tiles arranged in a checkerboard pattern, on a uniform base color. The Ziegler Shaal is also based on old patterns of the Luren, which actually no longer exist today. However, many of the modern Ziegler rugs are increasingly difficult to categorize and are similar only in their knotting quality.

Ziegler rugs from Afghanistan, Pakistan and India

Ziegler rugs are no longer knotted in Iran today because the Ziegler company went under with the stock market crash of 1929. After the economic consequences, the demand for the next few years had plummeted. However, the rug had already won many enthusiasts and so, over time, other countries began to continue the knotting of Ziegler rugs. In doing so, they refer to the old knotting methods and designs. Especially Afghan and Pakistani Ziegler are particularly good in your quality. However, many of the Zieglers from Afghanistan are traded and sold through the neighboring country of Pakistan because of the ongoing civil war. The original origin remains uncertain in some cases. Indian Ziegler rugs differ from them only very slightly. Only real rug experts can immediately recognize the differences in pattern, knotting and quality.

What is a Ziegler Chobi?

Actually, any Ziegler with a beige base color can be called a Chobi Ziegler. It is often assumed that Chobi and Farahan indicate differences in quality. However, this is a mistake, because Chobi translated means wood colored. In Afghanistan and Pakistan, therefore, rugs of all qualities are called Ziegler Chobi across the board. Likewise, the addition Farahan marks an old pattern and not the quality of a Ziegler rug.

Ziegler - The premium oriental rug

Among all the different oriental rugs there is none with a comparable variety of different designs, color combinations and patterns, and there is no end in sight to this continuing wealth of ideas. Only the beautiful pastel colors, the thin pile and the rustic feel unites the Ziegler rugs. In this variety, actually everyone can find his suitable. Whether in a rustic furnished living room, a modern bedroom or as a long runner in the hallway: by its restrained noble nature, it gives any room a fine touch.
