Bukhara Rugs
The original Bukhara originated in the Caucasus region and was named after the modern-day Uzbek city of Buxoro. Once this city was a stronghold of Muslim culture, located on the way of the legendary Silk Road. It was through this route that the Bukhara rug reached Europe. Old and antique Bukhara rugs from this period are very rare and mostly withheld from museums or exhibitions. History of Bukhara rugs In the city of Bukhara itself no rugs were made, much more the city gave the name to the rugs of a number of small nomadic tribes and villages. Today, typical Bukhara rugs are no longer traded in Uzbekistan and other countries have taken their place. Today, most hand-knotted Bukhara rugs come from Pakistan. These are softer and somewhat more high-pile knotted than their models.
Bukhara rugs in small sizes
Bukhara rugs are available in sizes up to 3 by 4 meters, but very popular are the small Bukhara rugs in the size of 90x60cm, 60x40cm or as runners in 90x30cm and 60x30cm. These small Bukhara rugs make ideal on dressers, cupboards or as small rugs in front of the door. Often they can be ordered in pairs, for example as a rug for the bed or as a car rug.
Weave and design of the Bukhara rug
The antique Bukhara rug is mostly red in color and is decorated with fine geometric shapes. Very famous is the so-called Tekke Bukhara knotted by a Turkmen tribe. It is decorated with several rows of small medallions and is still knotted in Pakistan. Today's Bukhara rug is slightly lighter in color than their originals and the patterns are also more uniform. The rugs are very light and extremely soft.
