The Persian Tabriz rug - extremely fine and noble
Tabriz rugs are known worldwide for their fine patterns and are generally knotted with great attention to detail. This rug is most famous among oriental rugs for its intricate motifs.
Origin of the Tabriz
The classic Tabriz rug originates from the large Persian city of Tabris, near the Turkish border. The city is located on the former Silk Road and was once considered the gateway to the Orient. Old Tabriz rugs tended to be made in more rustic qualities. Today's knottings, however, can reach a very high knotting density , as rugs with silk are also knotted in Tabriz today.
History of Tabriz rug
In Tabriz provenance, rug knotting, buying and selling has a long tradition - if not the longest ever in the whole Orient. Due to its location on the former Silk Road, the city has always been closely connected with trade. Through the city not only the famous Tabriz rugs reached Europe but also many other precious objects. The once rather rustic Tabriz rugs are today among the most elegant and at the same time most robust Persian rugs.
Design and color of Tabriz rugs
Hand-knotted Tabriz rugs come in many different colors. Most are knotted in darker shades of blue, red and green. In addition, there are also very light Tabriz rugs that are completely beige and pink. However, these are more expensive to purchase due to their rarity. Particularly fine Tabriz rugs are knotted on a silk warp, as a higher knotting density can be achieved here. One of the most famous patterns is the classic Tabriz Mahi pattern, which translates as fish pattern. Such rugs are densely and firmly knotted, but still have a thin pile. Thus, they combine elegance and long-lasting quality very well. Besides the Mahi pattern, Tabriz rugs are also known for their very elaborate motifs. Individual rugs are more reminiscent of pictures for walls than rugs for the floor. Each of these motif rugs depicts unique scenes from Persian culture and religion. But also the Last Supper or fantasy motifs are made. The design and knotting of these special Tabriz rugs requires a high level of talent and experience. In addition, the motif of such a rug must be planned most precisely. For planning, the weaver must be able to accurately estimate the interplay of knotting density, color effect and level of detail of the pattern in advance.
Knotting and fineness in Raj
The Tabriz rug - like almost all Persian rugs - is knotted in asymmetrical knots. The fineness is given in Raj and corresponds to the number of knots of an edge length of about 7 cm. The most common rugs of the type are the Tabriz 40 Raj and the Tabriz 50 Raj. The Tabriz 40 Raj has a knot count between 300,000-350,000 knots per square meter and the Tabriz 50 Raj between 450,000 and 500,000 accounts. Particularly fine Tabriz rugs can also have up to 60 Raj (700,000 knots) and 70 Raj (1,000,000 knots).
